What is a special enrollment period

A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is a time outside of the yearly open enrollment window when you can sign up for health insurance or change your current plan.

In most cases, you can only enroll during open enrollment each fall. But if you experience certain life changes, you may qualify for an SEP.

What qualifies you for an SEP?

You may be eligible for an SEP if you have a qualifying life event, such as:

  • Losing other health coverage (like through a job)
  • Moving to a new area
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having a baby or adopting a child
  • Changes in household income
  • Turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan

Because these events can affect your coverage needs, you’re given a limited time to make updates.

When can you enroll?

Most SEPs last 60 days from the date of your qualifying event. That means it’s important to act quickly so you don’t miss your opportunity to enroll or make changes.

Coverage start dates vary depending on when you enroll, so it’s best to act as soon as possible to avoid gaps.

Why it matters

If you don’t qualify for an SEP, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period to get coverage.

Having health insurance helps protect your health and your finances, especially when unexpected medical needs come up.

What if I choose COBRA coverage?

If you lose employer-sponsored coverage, you may have the option to continue it through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). This is a health insurance option that allows you and your dependents to temporarily continue your employer-sponsored health insurance coverage due to unemployment, furlough or reduction in work hours. This can help avoid gaps in care. It also lets you keep any amounts you’ve already paid toward your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.

However, there are important things to consider:

  • You’ll pay the full premium, including the portion your employer previously paid
  • There may be an additional administrative fee
  • Once you elect COBRA, you may not qualify for another SEP until the next open enrollment (unless you experience a new qualifying event)

What if I’m over the age of 65 and get laid off?

If your situation changes later in life, your coverage options may look different.

Individuals over age 65 can transition to a Medicare plan. Security Health Plan offers Medicare Advantage (also called Medicare Part C) plans. Learn more about Medicare from Security.
