Health insurance for young adults

There are several ways young adults can get health insurance. Whether you’re starting your first job, between plans or exploring your options, here are four common ways to get covered.
1. Stay on a parent’s plan
Many young adults can stay on a parent’s health insurance plan until age 26.
This is true even if you:
- Live at a different address
- Are married or have children
- Are in school or working
This option can be a simple and affordable way to stay covered while you figure out your next step.
2. Consider short-term coverage
Short-term, limited-duration plans can provide temporary coverage when you need it. These plans may be helpful if you are between jobs or waiting for employer benefits to begin.
Keep in mind: short-term plans don’t have to meet all Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements. That means they may not cover all services. Be sure to review the details so you understand what’s included.
3. See if you qualify for financial help
Depending on your income, you may qualify for low- or no-cost coverage through government programs like: Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
If you qualify, you can enroll at any time during the year, not just during open enrollment, and coverage starts immediately.
4. Shop plans on the Marketplace
You can also buy your own health insurance through the federal Marketplace.
Open enrollment typically runs each year from Nov. 1 through Dec. 15. During this time, you can compare plans and see if you qualify for financial assistance to lower your monthly premium.
