Answering your questions about Security Health Plan
Who are we?
Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc. is a health maintenance organization (HMO), a type of health insurance company part of the Marshfield Clinic Health System. Security Health Plan offers a variety of group and individual health insurance options for people of all ages and all income levels living in 41 counties in Wisconsin. We have more than 400 employees in Wisconsin.
What is an HMO?
"HMO" is an abbreviation for "health maintenance organization." Health maintenance organizations such as Security Health Plan try to keep health care costs down by keeping people healthy. We encourage health care that prevents people from getting sick. Our members receive services from health care providers (doctors, hospitals and other health care professionals and facilities) who have contracts with us to take care of our members. That means our members have guaranteed access to health care providers in our network. Our network includes 9,000 doctors and specialists, 76 hospitals in Wisconsin, and more than 65,000 pharmacies nationwide.
Is Security Health Plan an HMO?
Yes. Our members can see any of the many physicians, hospitals and other providers who are part of their policy’s provider network. Our network includes providers at Marshfield Clinic and many other clinics, hospitals, physicians and facilities in our service area. In general, you will only have insurance coverage if you see providers affiliated with your Security Health Plan policy. There are different sets of providers, based on the coverage you have. Check our online Provider Directory for the providers associated with different coverage options.
What are the hours for Customer Service?
Customer Service is staffed from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The telephone number is 1-800-472-2363; TTY 711. Outside of these hours, members can leave a message. A customer service representative will return your call the next business day.
I’m not ready to enroll. Where can I get more information?
If you are looking for additional information before you enroll, you can learn more about our insurance options online or register for a seminar. Call 1-877-433-2124 to talk to a sales representative.
Can you take the premium directly out of my bank account?
Yes, you can set up an automatic withdrawal from your bank when you purchase an individual or family policy. Then, you’ll never miss a payment. Simply complete the Automatic Clearing House (ACH) form included in the information packets and your premium will be automatically deducted from your bank account.
How far in advance should I enroll in a policy?
We generally recommend you apply two months before you want your coverage to be effective. The 2015 open enrollment period for insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace has ended. Unless you experience a qualifying event such as marriage, adoption or the birth of a child, you won't be able to sign-up for coverage until the next enrollment period, which begins in November. Never cancel or drop other coverage you have before you receive written confirmation that your application has been accepted and coverage is in effect.
How can I find out if my doctor is in Security Health Plan’s provider network?
What if my doctor is not on Security Health Plan’s provider list?
Call our Customer Service Department to see whether your doctor or other health care provider has been added. You can encourage your doctor to become a Security Health Plan network provider. If your doctor is not on our provider list, we can help you choose a new doctor you feel comfortable seeing. Security Health Plan has a wide range of high-quality doctors and health care specialists in its network.
What if I’m not sure whether I need to visit a doctor?
Any time you’re unsure whether a condition is so serious that you need to see a provider, you can call our 24-Nurse Line at 1-800-549-3174. This is our way of making sure you have access to health information when you need it.
What happens if I am out of your service area on vacation and need to see a doctor?
Security Health Plan covers treatment of medical emergencies and urgent situations when you need care outside of our service area. If an out-of-area emergency occurs, please call Customer Service to report what happened and where care was sought. That number is 1-800-472-2363. If you’re out of our area and need a prescription filled, most retail pharmacies are affiliated with our prescription vendor, RxEDO. Prescriptions filled with a non-participating pharmacy will not be reimbursed by Security Health Plan.
Do you offer prescription drug coverage?
We offer a variety of drug coverage options as a supplement to our group coverage. You can learn more about prescription coverage options here.
