Security Health Plan's 24-hour Nurse Line

Research shows that approximately 80% of emergency room visits involve medical situations that do not require immediate attention. Reducing the need for these time consuming and costly visits, without reducing the quality of health care, is possible with a 24-hour source of health information. Security Health Plan has made that possibility a reality.

Healthful help right away

Our 24-hour Nurse Line allows members to help themselves and their families to health information they need, whenever they need it, seven days a week (including holidays). And they can use it as often as they like, always at no charge.

Healthful help as near as a phone

Registered nurses are always ready to help a mother decide whether her child can wait until morning to see a doctor. They can provide information on treating a minor illness or injury at home. Or they can provide referrals to community support resources or support groups when they are needed. All it takes is a toll-free phone call.

  • Callers are asked about their health problem.
  • When the symptoms described are serious, the nurse will recommend a visit to the physician, urgent care or the emergency department. In the event of a true emergency, callers will be instructed to call 911 or their local emergency number.
  • When symptoms are not serious, the nurse can give instructions for care at home. (Later, the nurse may call back to make sure the problem is resolving).

Working with personal care physicians

Records of calls to the Nurse Line may be placed in callers’ medical files so their physicians will have the most up-to-date information when providing continuing care.

Registered nurses staffing our 24-hour Nurse Line have years of experience caring for patients "one on one." All health information given adheres to the most stringent guidelines. In addition, a staff of physician specialists at Marshfield Clinic is available at all times for consultations with the nurse.

Valuable information, also free

When you are feeling fine, our Nurse Line can help keep you that way. When you have questions about health topics (nutrition, prenatal care, breaking the smoking habit, etc.) the nurse can answer questions and mail free additional information. The nurses can also connect callers to recorded information concerning hundreds of topics.

Accessing the Nurse Line

Members can access the 24-hour Nurse Line by:

  • Calling Security Health Plan's Customer Service Department at 1-800-472-2363 or TTY 1-877-727-2232 and you will be directed to the nurse line.
  • Logging on to Security Health Online where you will find the direct phone number. You also have the option of emailing the nurse line with a question. A nurse will call you within 24 hours of your email.
  • Referencing the member handbook.
