Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer affects many men every year and can result in death. The following screenings are recommended:

  • Digital rectal examination (DRE) by your health care provider should be done every year after age 50 to check the prostate gland for lumps and swelling.
  • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a blood test that may help diagnose prostate disease. Men with a positive family history of prostate cancer should be offered an annual PSA. All men over 50 should discuss having this test with their provider. There are other forms of PSA testing, but none are considered standard screening methods at this time.
